2005 Damn Am at Volcom Photos by Justin Keena

Every once and a while... I get into a nasty mood and nothing lifts me out of it.  I literally hate on everything.  When I am in a mood like this the last thing that I want to do is go to a contest at the Volcom Warehouse in Costa Mesa and watch some goddamn ams.    Nothing against the contest in itself it’s just my nature to hate on everything.  After a few minutes my perspective began to change quickly.  I began to feel happier; the level of skateboarding was was snapping me out of my funk.  Settling in under the shade of a nice tree the first banger I saw was the Powell Am Jordan Hoffart snap a massive ollie to flat.  Jordan’s clean flowing style was lifting my spirits and this was only the semi finals.  By the time finals had begun I was  smiling because I had just been treated to a blistering taste of metal provided by North County San Diego’s very own Nihilist.  There is nothing like a little black metal to cheer you up.   The finals were a remarkable display of skateboarding.  I realize it is a bit of a cliché but God Damn these kids are getting better and better every year.    Dominique Johnson was kickflipping into everything.  Danny Rosario was killing it with huge backside flips over the pyramid. Nick Dom Pierre gapped out to noseblunt slide on the snake charmer rail during his second run of the finals.  I was a little surprised he wasn’t in the top ten, because he killed it.  Terell Robinson’s performance was amazing and he was all painted up as a skeleton. Sick!  I am super glad I got to know him now because he is going to be famous soon.   The man of the hour was Tyler Hendley with his unwavering consistency.  In his runs Tyler delivered a hardflip over the pyramid, a massive kickflip to flat, frontside flip to fakie nose grind switch 180 out on the hubba.  All this was enough to grab Tyler first place.   Best Trick belonged to Terell.  He tre flipped the gap to boardslide.  This brought more joy to my heart than I have felt in ages.  The contest was theraputic.   I wouldn’t be surprised if the Damn Am cured cancer.  Good shit.
