The following is an interview with Andrew WK we talk about foot fetishes, his new album and a host of other important things. Start reading now!
“There is nothing either fundamentally good, nor anything fundamentally evil; everything is relative, relative to our point of view.  It is extremely possible that something, perfectly indifferent in itself, may be indeed distasteful in your eyes, but may be most delicious in mine; and immediately I find it  pleasing, immediately I find it amusing, regardless of our inability to agree in assigning a character to it.  Should I not be a fool to deprive myself of it merely because you condemn it?”  – The Marquis de Sade.  Excerpt from The 120 Days of Sodom (1784)

Andrew WK, I HEARD THAT YOU JUST RELEASED A LIVE ALBUM, OR ARE ABOUT TO. LIVE IN HAWAII?
No, we just played Hawaii in December but no album was recorded. I do have a couple of live albums I’m working on, actually, so it’s cool that you asked that. I have two live albums that I’d like to release. One of them I would put out for free on the internet so people can download it. I would like to release them, and I have plans to release the songs that are on the DVD about to come out. The DVD is the biggest thing I’ve been working on in the last  6 months. It’s comprised of all the footage we’ve assembled since the beginning of 2000 up through 2004, so really it starts when I Get Wet came out and goes on until the end of 2004 with The Wolf.  We took about $300 of video footage and put together the performances which best represented what we did in those first four years, and I’m really happy with what’s been done.  I’m hoping to ride that into the next album.

AND WHAT’S THE TITLE OF  THAT DVD?
It’s called “Who Knows?” and it comes out on January 26, of 2006.

EVERY  BAND NEEDS A GOOD, LIVE DVD AND A LOT OF PEOPLE LIKE WHAT YOU DO BECAUSE IT’S JUST GUT-LEVEL, GOOD TIMES.  WHILE GROWING UP IN MICHIGAN, Andrew WK PLAYED IN A LOT OF METAL AND PUNK BANDS THERE. RIGHT?
Well, I wouldn’t say a lot…

WHAT WERE SOME OF THE NAMES OF THE METAL BANDS Andrew WK PLAYED IN?
Well, we sort of considered it grindcore, or thrash metal. I just sort of viewed it in terms of the drums I was playing. I started playing in those bands when I was 16 and played in one for about a year at the longest.  It was called Abhorrence. Actually, at first it was called Nazgul, but I joined the band after they renamed themselves Abhorrence.

AND IT WAS GRINDCORE?
Yeah, pretty much straight up grindcore, or maybe power-violence. I don’t really like putting labels on music like this…

ESPECIALLY WITH METAL. IT HAS A LOT OF LABELS.
It’s all music and doesn’t really need to be defined except for the people that need that. It’s one entire whole. Things cannot occur in isolation.

ROCK, HEAVY METAL, JAZZ… IT’S ALL DIFFERENT SPINS OF THE SAME THING.
That’s what’s exciting about it.  Music is this incomparable phenomenon.  Music’s unique unto itself.  We didn’t invent it, but we’ve sort of tapped into it because these frequencies have been transmitting since the beginning of time.

ANDREW WK ALLEGEDLY HAD SOME PROBLEMS WITH CENSORS ON THE FIRST Andrew WK ALBUM, WHICH WAS ORIGINALLY CALLED “BLOW YOUR BONE.”  IS THAT RIGHT?
Well, somewhat right.  That was originally the title of the  second album and there were some problems with the cover of the first album.

WITH SEXUAL ORIENTATION?
Not with sexual orientation but with a drug misinterpretation of the first album cover, which has a bloody nose on it. The advertising standards banned the display. It was released everywhere else in the world first and then we released it in the U.S., and at that point we had decided to go ahead and cover-up the cover with a black sticker.

I WAS TRYING TO SEGUE INTO THE THEME OF THIS Andrew WK INTERVIEW, WHICH IS FETISHES…
Okay.

I WAS KIND OF EXCITED WHEN I HEARD ABOUT THIS BECAUSE I’M NOT A FREAK, BUT I HAVE FETISHES, AND I OFTEN ASK MY FRIENDS IF THEY HAVE FETISHES, AND I FIND THAT MOST PEOPLE ARE SOMEWHAT INHABITED TALKING ABOUT THE SUBJECT. I DON’T MIND TELLING PEOPLE I HAVE A FOOT FETISH MYSELF.
I like feet, but I don’t think I have a fetish.

YEAH, I’VE BEEN TRYING TO GAUGE MINE MYSELF.
I don’t know how you would tell. How do you know if you have a foot fetish and you don’t just like feet?

WELL, I’VE BEEN KIND OF GAUGING IT MYSELF AND I’VE MOVED UP TO FOOT PORN.  MAYBE YOU’RE RIGHT.  MAYBE I DO JUST LIKE FEET A LOT.
Do you care what the feet look like?

ABSOLUTELY.  IT’S LIKE IF YOU’RE A BREAST MAN OR AN ASS MAN.  THEY HAVE TO BE NICE FEET.  I WON’T DO ANYTHING WITH FEET OR UTILIZE FEET IN A SEXUAL WAY IF THEY’RE BUSTED OR NOT GOOD LOOKING.  KNOW WHAT I MEAN?
That makes sense.

YEAH, SO YOU WOULD SAY THAT Andrew WK HAS NO REAL FETISHES AS FAR AS YOU KNOW?
No, nothing that’s taken to that level, like a refined taste. But there’re things I like, but I just don’t have anything at that level. I’d like to have one. I think it’d be really exciting. Maybe you just have to get into it.  Force yourself to do it.

I DON’T KNOW WHAT IT IS.  THERE WAS NO FORCING IT FOR ME.  IT WAS JUST VERY STRANGE.  I SAW FEET AND IMMEDIATELY IT WAS LIKE A LIGHTBULB CAME ON, LIKE, “I LIKE FEET. WOW.”  I WOULDN’T SAY I’M OBSESSED WITH FEET, BUT I PROBABLY LIKE FEET MORE THAN THE NEXT GUY.  I WOULD SAY I’M ON A LESSER DEGREE.  I’M A LOW-CALIBER FOOT-FETISHER.
Maybe it’s just the beginning?  Have you ever read 120 Days in Sodom?

I ACTUALLY OWN THE BOOK! MY MOTHER GAVE IT TO ME, IF YOU CAN BELIEVE THAT.  BUT I HAVE NOT READ IT YET.
It’s a classic.

I THINK I WOULD DEFINITELY ENJOY HANGING WITH THE MARQUIS DE SADE.
It’s a very exciting book and I highly recommend it. It has everything imagined, or that we’ve talked about, or we can think of… It’s all always been there.
