I got the word that the Hood Games number Six was going down. This year it was straight up in the Tenderloin of San Francisco, off Market and Fifth on a little alley street called Turk. With fresh hypodermic needles in plain site, along with The Dollhouse strip club, Tenderloin Liquor, a halfway house and a hotel/brothel in close proximity, this was most assuredly, “the hood”. The great Dave Chappell said it best, “There ain’t noting tender about it, that shit is rough!” Which turns out to be the perfect venue for the Hood Games.

But, none of these negative aspects stopped the team at Hood Games from fulfilling their dream of putting on an event in the Tenderloin district. With only 6 off duty police officers, the vibe was surprisingly mellow and happy. Crack dealers took the day off (mostly) and there was only one stabbing (it actually happened around the corner). Pretty good for the 1000 or so people who came to watch some of SF’s best do a demo. FTC skaters Chico Brenes, Mike York and even Real pro, the Huf himself showed up to shred the “Loin”. Countless other heads were on hand to witness the first ever skateboard event in “the loin”, including Ace Trucks own Joey Tershay and Creature zombie Alex Horn. Comet Skateboards gave away over 50 hand painted decks and The Hood Games Girls (students from Oakland High’s Visual Arts Academy) airbrushed t-shirts to give away. Maybe your mom was one of the fifty lucky mothers who got a fresh picked red rose to sniff the day away. Doogood was also there making Mother’s Day cards for The Marian Residence for Women, a domestic violence shelter close by.

Huf was there!

The Hood Games was founded by Keith “KDub” Williams, Adjoa Murden, Karl Watson and MCKaya Fortune and continues today with additional support from Jason Salfi of Comet Skateboards and Ben and Paul from Clean Skateshop.  It has now become a go-to event for those in “da hood” and with past events in Oakland and south central L.A., it is awesome to see them reach out to other Cali hoods as well. Big ups to all the sponsors: Comet Skateboards, Satori Wheels, LRG Clothing, Clean Skateshop, HUF, FTC, Thrasher, Glassade, Guerrilla, SPAUSA, Doogood, SCION, Farmerbrown, Annie’s Homegrown, Bar Cliff, Whole Foods, StoneyRidge Farms.
