PRO FLOW: The Fine Art Of Backdoor Sponsorship. Words By Randome

WHAT EXACTLY IS “FLOW SPONSORSHIP”?
Flow or Product Flow to be more precise is a company’s way of saying that they can’t make money off of you just yet. Even worse from aspiring skater’s point of view, is rep flow! Rep flow is when a sales rep in an effort to increase sales in his territory, “flows” product to a local shop sponsored skater, giving the skater false hope that they are on the fast track to skate stardom. Almost every pro comes from a local neighborhood posse. While the Pro skater made his way through the ranks of flow and then AM, the rest of the squad just stayed around skating and chilling with the local crew. While the local pro was off in Barcelona for the entire summer partying his life away the local crew were skating just as hard the whole time at the shitty ledge behind the grocery store. Have you ever been to a demo and seen a pro skating and there is this dude that you have never seen before sporting all the same gear as the pro?  In fact often this dude might even be doing harder tricks than his pro counterpart. You think to yourself, “Why isn’t this guy sponsored?” The secret is, he is sponsored, by his pro-friend. For some weird reason the company sponsoring this pro saw something in him that they did not see in his friend. There are many levels of pro flow. Ranging from full access to the company training facility (skatepark), spot in the van on road trips, product walk throughs, to finally, just hand me down boards from the pro friend.

The pro flow sponsorship character usually is a couch crasher, but may have serious responsibilities like a job and school. They are always down at the drop of a dime to skate at any time of day. This person is usually the motivator of the session. Rewards in the form of money and food are usually thrown in the ear of this guy from the pro to land tricks that the pro might not even try. For all the pros who have a flow rider we salute you! Below you will meet four  men who have perfected the fine art of Backdoor Sponsorship.
